It’s Happening

Events are unfolding beyond our control. We can but sit back as spectators to the inner struggle of a man occurring before our very eyes. I speak of the emergence of Evil Richt. Early reports from the field noted a seemingly minor detail in an otherwise normal situation report. But the closing statements of this report tells us all we need to know:

“Oh, and Richt was pretty sure he swallowed a gnat at some point and had to stop his post-practice news conference to turn around and cough.

I hope PETA doesn’t hear about this.”

Surely we are all familiar with a certain Colonel Walter E. Kurtz, a character “gone native” from Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and made popular by Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now. Take a look at this:

“Well, you see, Willard, in this war, things get confused out there. Power, ideals, the old morality, and practical military necessity. But out there with these natives, it must be a temptation to be God. Because there’s a conflict in every human heart, between the rational and irration, between good and evil. And good does not always triumph. Sometimes, the dark side overcomes what Lincoln called the better angels of our nature.”

How very true. We’ve seen it before and we’re about to see it again. We are all witness to the imminent appearance of Evil Richt. And I can’t wait. Man, the weekend can’t get here fast enough because I love the sound of the UGA kick off cheer on a Saturday afternoon. It sounds like… victory. Someday this season’s gonna end.
