A year of the Dawg

On the evening of December 31, 2010, as I walked out of the Liberty Bowl, it began to rain. I sought shelter under a tent to wait out the sudden downpour and thought about the game I had just seen the Dawgs lose to the University of Central Florida Knights. And I wondered how in the world we ever got to where we were.

“There’s reasons why we ended up the way we did,” Richt said. “We’ve got to make changes. We’ve got to make sure that doesn’t happen again in the future. When you start saying ‘change,’ that doesn’t necessarily mean personnel… It’s more of how we go about our business. We’re going to improve. We’re going to get Georgia where it belongs.”

I was worried. I knew what was coming and I dreaded it. And it was as if the weather was playing along, crying for me and them Dawgs. No, actually, after the way we played that game in the Liberty Bowl, we didn’t deserve any sympathy. And Coach Richt was right. Things had to change.

“I don’t know if you’d call that the straw that broke the camel’s back or that last spark that lit the fire that got things moving around here,” tight end Aron White said. “It was definitely time for a change. … It definitely got us going. It definitely lit a fire under us and got us to working and pushing.”

And now look at us. A year later and a completely different team from the one that limped out of Memphis and back home to Athens. As I think back on that night a year ago and I remember that hard rain that fell after the game, I’ve come to realize that it was a cleansing rain. And I’m glad Memphis and the Liberty Bowl happened. Because it precipitated a change within the program that we all love. A change that we can now be proud of.

Happy New Year, folks. Let’s keep this thing rolling and start off 2012 undefeated.

Go Dawgs!

My Santa is best

Sorry for my lack of posting yesterday. I was too busy waiting in line for some Concords. Anyway, I hope this day finds you all with your loved ones, surrounded by good food and, of course, lots of loot.

And speaking of which, after the 2009 season, a good friend of mine sent out her annual “What do you want for Christmas?” email. Here was my reply:

Item 1: One (1) Pro-style quarterback

• Laser-rocket arm (must be able to throw the deep out route)
• Pocket passer with the ability to scramble (4.6 – 4.8/40 time should suffice)
• Must be able to read SEC-style defenses
• Must be committed to playing at UGA for all four years of eligibility

Item 2: Two (2) Monster™ defensive tackles

• Both must be at least 6’3”, over 300 lbs, at or sub 5.0/40 time optimal
• Ability to read play-action and misdirection plays
• Ability to play assignment football and stay in their lanes
• Ability to make open-field tackles
• Ability in short yardage situations to dig in tighter than a tick on an Alabama ‘coon hound

Item 3: One (1) entire kick-off coverage team

• Must not be stupid

Item 4: One (1) Defensive Coordinator

• Must be able to adjust strategies during a game
• Must be able to chew concertina wire and piss napalm
• Any relation to Erk Russell a plus

All of the above must despise the color orange.

I realize that this is a rather extensive list and that even the most super of Santas may have trouble with it. Therefore, I am prepared to accept delivery no later than September 4th, 2010.

Well, after that 2010 season, I was sure my good friend had come through with items 1 and 3 on my list. But I definitely didn’t get item 2 and I was still holding onto the receipt of item 4.

Now, after the 2011 season, I’m pretty sure I got items 2 and 4 to add to item 1. But it seems that I may have misplaced item 3. So, this Christmas, that’s what I’m hoping for. Another item 3.

Merry Christmas, folks. I hope we all get what we want and Go Dawgs!

Way to go, Marlon Brown!

According to the Dawgs’ official site, Marlon Brown has been nominated for a performance of the year award. If you’ll recall, Marlon had 4 catches for 121 yards and 2 touchdowns against Vanderbilt this past Saturday. He also just missed out on another touchdown late in the game when Murray slightly overthrew him on a stop-and-go route. I regret that my Internet is acting up and I can’t provide any video of Brown’s efforts. Hopefully, we’ll see more of it as the season progresses.

Well done, Marlon Brown. The next time you’re home in Memphis, wings are on me.

Memphis is a ghost town

I guess that’s what happens when there are games all day today down the road in Oxford, in Nashville and in Knoxville. On top of that, the University of Memphis held their annual Midnight Madness basketball practice last night. I don’t know the exact numbers but the photos I saw published in the Commercial Appeal’s website yesterday of the crowds gathered at the Fed Ex Forum suggested that quite a number of Memphibians stayed up well past their usual bedtimes.

As an aside, I wonder what that must feel like for the Memphis football team, the fact that way more people are interested in seeing a basketball practice than a regular season game at the Liberty Bowl?

Anyway, I don’t really have anything informative to add regarding the Dawgs’ game tonight. This post is the equivalent of nervous chatter. And, yes, it’s a bit strange to be nervous about a game against Vanderbilt. After all, this was a team we shut out last year, when our defense was still learning the ropes. On top of that, Vandy’s offense is ranked pretty low this season while our defense has improved tremendously since our last meeting. Yeah, nothing really to be nervous about.

So let’s all hope for a well-played and well-coached game without any injuries. Unlike our previous few games, I’d sure like to begin celebrating midway through the second quarter tonight.

Go Dawgs!

We. Must. Win.

It may have come up from time to time that I live in Memphis, TN. And I’ve lamented the fact that, even though I live about as far away from Knoxville as I can within the boundaries of the state of Tennessee, the stench of big orange lingers. Hell, I think I just drove by Phil Fulmer on the way home from work:

To say that I’d like for the Dawgs to win this Saturday would be akin to a man who has just finished taking a walking tour of Cambodia saying “Why, yes, that mine detector was quite handy to have”.

I have friends and coworkers who have marked this week on their calendars ever since we put a whoopin’ on their boys this time last year. This may or may not have been entirely my fault due to various actions I might have partaken in after said Dawgs victory.

Suffice it to say, I don’t only want for us to be victorious this weekend. I need it. Badly.

Go Dawgs!

Let’s make some noise!

Here we are, folks, on to the next installment of “Win this game or else!” Like Ben Dukes, I hardly agree with this sentiment. But, what are you going to do? The almighty sports media has spoken and we the public have no recourse but to listen. Well, I tire of listening and I’m ready to make my own noise. While I may not have a cowbell, I do have the next best thing: the vuvuzela.

Who among us can ever forget the wonderful South African siren song that serenaded us during last summer’s stupendous soccer soiree, the 2010 World Cup? Hell, I know I’m still trying to forget. But, sometimes, in the process of forgetting, it can be helpful to revisit that which we are trying not to remember.

I made this video ’round about this time last year, in preparation for our game with them Starkville Dogs. It seems even more fitting this year.

I think Coach Richt would agree.

‘Twas the night before football

You know, I considered doing the whole silly poetry schtick. But then I remembered that I can barely string together a comprehensible sentence, much less one that rhymes. Besides, the only rhymes I know are of an amphibrachic nature, if you know what I mean. And, honestly, we’re all the better for not having to go through that limerical experience.

So… Football! Tomorrow! Just hours away! Y’all ready? I’ve just had a sign that, I think, bodes well for our future. Long story short, I was poised to help a friend move into a new place this weekend. But then I received a text from her telling me that “I’m off the hook : )” because movers have been hired.

I realize that some things are vastly more important than other things. I do. I realize that. Really. And so I say, I’m very proud of my friend for what she has accomplished through a difficult time. She has done many good things that will help important people. Very well done, Liz.

(And I get to watch football!)
