We’ve got to be nasty

A quote from Coach Rodney Garner:

“But to be the dominating player that you want at this level, when Big John goes between these lines” – Garner pointed to the field – “you want Big John. You can be Huggy Bear outside, you can be whover you want outside, but when you walk between there, you’ve gotta be that (nasty) guy, every day.”

That’s what I’m talking about. I mentioned before the season started how I’d like for our defensive players to approach their opponents. And I’m glad to read that this is the exact approach dictated to our players by our coaches.

It’s kind of like, yeah, sure, I’d love to have a beer with you after the game. But during the game, I’m going to beat the Hell out of you until they tell me to stop.

Leaps and bounds

You know what makes me incredibly happy about Jarvis Jones and Bacarri Rambo appearing on seemingly every All-American list released thus far? They’re both on defense. Isn’t this exactly the sort of thing we were all hoping for?

If our defense’s transformation from Year 1 to Year 2 was this significant, what do you think Year 3 is going to look like?

Thank you, Todd Grantham, Scott Lakatos and Kirk Olivadotti.

We all know how much Tree likes to hit. TJ Stripling had this to say about him:

“I don’t know man, I thought he was going to be kind of a hot head really,” Stripling said. “Just from watching his highlights from high school, I thought, ‘man, he’s probably crazy.”

Well, it runs in the family. Older brother Alexander gets his licks in, too:

“I love to hit, I just love it,” Ogletree said. “I feel like to play fullback or linebacker or any position between the lines, you’ve got to just love hitting. When I play fullback, that’s just me. I was just born to play fullback.”

I loved that run of Zander’s late in the game to set up our final touchdown.

“Got them off guard, didn’t we?” Richt said, laughing.

The icing on the cake

From ESPN’s recap of our third win in a row over Tech:

Georgia tacked on a field goal with just 3 seconds left in the half, getting a second chance when Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson called a timeout just before the snap trying to mess up the Bulldogs. If only he had known they would make a bad snap, leading to an ugly miss by a Blair Walsh. On the do-over, Walsh knocked through a 41-yarder.

Know how you can tell how smart Paul Johnson is? He wears a football on his head. It’s, like, a prosthetic forehead thing that shows how much he has football on his mind. Which is all of the time on account of that football on his head. Know what I mean?

Another gem:

Georgia Tech (8-4) rushed for 243 yards out of the triple-option against the nation’s second-ranked run defense, but just 79 came after halftime. Tevin Washington threw a pair of interceptions. The result was all too familiar to the Yellow Jackets: another loss to the Bulldogs.

I don’t know what Coach Grantham says or does at halftime. But I’m not sure I’m meant to know. His powers are beyond my understanding.

“The only good bug is a dead bug”

I had a dream last night. It might have possibly been induced by an overdose of turkey. Because it was a very strange dream. We lived in a future where bugs had taken over. Mankind struggled for survival but we weren’t going down without a fight. In fact, plans for an invasion of the bugs’ territory were in place and set to launch tomorrow. It was a lot like this, actually:

Kill ’em all. Indeed. And, look, if Doogie Howser, M.D. is giving out advice on how to take out bugs, I have the feeling that Alec Ogletree, LB and Bacarri Rambo, SS will be just fine.

Told you it was a weird dream.

We must crush Tech.

“Our guys knew who Erk Russell was”

Here’s the full transcript of Coach Richt’s presser today. Regarding pounding the rock down Tech’s throat:

“We always like to run the football, but you have to have backs who can do it and some backs who are willing to hang on to the football in the process.

Nice choice of words there. I’m pretty sure all of our backs are “willing to hang on to the football”. I think it’s interesting that Coach Richt is apparently emphasizing the mental aspect of it. After all, our two main backs for the Kentucky game don’t exactly see the field all that often. And against Tech, we may be relying on them more and more if Carlton Thomas doesn’t play and Isaiah Crowell isn’t quite ready to shoulder the full load. I’m sure Mr. Harton and Mr. Malcolme get the picture.

Speaking of getting the picture:

We are going to honor his memory at the ballgame with a decal on our helmet. We have a pretty good look at what it’s going to look like. It wasn’t quite what we were working on, but it will be something that will be very recognizable and obvious that we are honoring him.

Some variation of this would be my choice for helmet sticker

And now, word on Erk Russell:

The thing that’s a little bit different with our guys in their relationship to Erk Russell is that we invited him to come my first year. He spoke to the team, but he also spoke to the defense. There was a time where not only that group got to hear him, but we kept the video of it. From time to time we would show it to the defense, more so than the offense, because he was really talking about what he did with the defense. Our guys knew who Erk Russell was. They might not have been sitting in the room when he was there in person, but just about every defensive player that has come through here has seen the video. I don’t remember the last time we have seen it, but it’s probably time to pull the thing out.

I love this so, so much. And, yes, Coach, please pull out the tape. The way our defense has been playing, after seeing this tape and hearing Erk talk… Good lord. Yes, please pull out the tape for the Tech game, Coach.
