Championship-style game

Saw this quote by Coach Dan Mullen regarding the attitude he wants the Mississippi State Bulldogs to have for their match up against Auburn this Saturday:

“I don’t want to control the emotions (of his players). I want our guys to let (the emotions) go and play this as if it is a championship-style game. That first conference game, with the two teams playing it, especially this early in the season, means so much. You’re talking about a two-game swing, not a one-game swing in this one game. Whoever wins this game is in first place in the SEC West and also has a two-game advantage because you hold the tiebreaker head-to-head over the other opponent. It becomes such a big game. I don’t know if it’s a statement game just because they’re defending national champions. For us, it’s a statement game because this is our opportunity to jump into first place in the SEC West.”

See, that’s kind of how I hope our guys are looking at our game. It’s not a big, must win game because of national perception or because somebody’s job may be on the line. It’s a big, must win game because winning it can help the football team attain its remaining preseason goals. It’s a big, must win game because winning it is good for the University of Georgia Bulldogs.
